General Surgery is the branch of medicine that deals with diagnosis and treatment of illness through operative procedures. General surgery is a specialty covering a wide range of surgical procedures. It primarily involves procedures within the abdomen and extremities. Many can be performed in the surgeon’s office or as an outpatient. Many other more complicated operations require inpatient hospitalization.
